SALARY RANGE: $90,845 - $120,139
HIRING RANGE:    $90,845 - $115,948

Position Summary:
The Supervisor, Infrastructure and Operations, is responsible for leading and managing the planning, procurement, deployment, replacement, administration and maintenance of the board’s information technology (IT) infrastructure to support student learning and administrative operations. This role ensures optimal performance, security and availability of all technical systems and services including infrastructure investment optimization.

The Supervisor, Infrastructure and Operations leads, supports, supervises and manages technical teams of staff responsible for servers, storage, telecommunications, wired and wireless networks, identity management and service desk, ensuring alignment with the board’s strategic and operational plans and goals. As a member of the department leadership team, this role participates in budget planning and procurement activities, infrastructure architecture design and planning, and works collaboratively with staff in the effective and efficient delivery of IT hardware and software services to meet student and staff needs.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee the procurement, deployment, administration, maintenance, sustainability, performance, reliability, security and scalability of infrastructure technology equipment, systems and services which includes but is not limited to wired and wireless networks, virtual and physical servers, virtual and physical storage, telecommunications, security cameras, firewalls, identity and email system management, IT service desk, operating system management, data centre resources, backups, and other associated infrastructure equipment and services
  • Supervise union and non-union staff, which includes the assignment of work, tracking and monitoring work activities, managing performance and conduct issues, completing performance appraisals, coaching, team building, promoting collaboration, supporting change management initiatives, succession planning and goal setting activities
  • Develop, administer, monitor, track and manage the infrastructure and operations sectional budget, which includes analyzing and documenting planned and unplanned variances in budget and expenditure allocations, developing asset renewal plans and preparing annual three-year budget and expenditure forecast plans
  • Monitor and control expenditures to ensure cost-effective operations and the optimization of infrastructure investments, leveraging asset management strategies
  • Lead and manage effective relationships with external vendors and service providers, ensuring they meet contractual obligations and service level agreements
  • Monitor trends and report on technology changes, providing technical advice and consultation
  • Provide project leadership and oversee and participate on project teams
  • Develop, oversee, establish, contribute to and maintain work processes, protocols, guidelines, procedures and policies for technology infrastructure and operating system test and production environments and services
  • Monitor and report on any security intrusions and threats, leading and coordinating with staff threat detection and analysis, containment, eradication, recovery and post-incident reviews
  • Provide technical expertise in the preparation and evaluation of tenders, requests for proposals and other procurement methodologies, in collaboration with staff from Thames Valley and other school boards and agencies
  • Establish, maintain and test data centre and wide area network disaster recovery plans, playbooks and processes
  • Perform ongoing preventative maintenance procedures and upgrades for technology infrastructure and services
  • Assess current internet utilization and plan for future capacity growth and changes in expectations
  • Complete project and financial reporting for Ministry funded projects including creating spreadsheets and technical updates with performance graphs, technical diagrams and system data captures
  • Attend meetings that will require travel within and outside of the board’s district
  • Ability to respond to unplanned and planned work afterhours



Qualities/Skills/Specialized Knowledge:
  • Strong understanding of internet security, firewall configuration, Microsoft Active Directory, identity management, Wi-Fi communication standards, security and access controls, data centre operations, files servers, networking, security, disaster recovery and storage
  • Well-developed project management skills including project planning, technology procurement, time management, risk and issue management, work coordination and assignment, technology deployment, training and budget allocation
  • Knowledge of cloud-based data centre services such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and cloud hosted applications such as Google G-Suite and Microsoft Office 365
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with effective communication skills, both orally and written
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Education, Experience and Qualifications:
  • Completion of four (4) year post-secondary education in a computer related field or equivalent
  • Microsoft and networking certification is strongly recommended
  • Five (5) years of related work experience is required, with experience in a school board/public sector environment preferred
